Blackhawk Solar Pumps revitalise former landfill site ensuring compliance with EPA regulations

News

A recreational park, which was once a large hill covered with boulders, has been transformed from a landfill into a beautiful outdoor space. The area, encased in sturdy wire and adorned with wildflowers, now features four Apollo Solar Piston Pumps discreetly installed in caissons and powered by low-profile solar panels located behind a ridge. These pumps help ensure the site remains compliant with EPA regulations.

The Apollo dewatering pumps have replaced electric submersible pumps that struggled in extreme heat. They are part of a comprehensive system of wells, monitors, and pipes designed to manage the methane produced by decomposing waste. This methane is vented and incinerated in an enclosed flare system situated at the eastern end of the park. The city is obligated to maintain the site until 2035, during which it must monitor gas production, gas migration, liquid seepage, and potential impacts on groundwater.

The boulders encasing the landfill help control erosion during the rare but intense rainstorms, while the use of decomposed granite stones and desert plants adds both functionality and beauty to the site. Many construction materials utilised in the park, such as crushed concrete, asphalt, and tyres, were recycled from other projects rather than being sent to another landfill.

The Apollo pumps are vertically mounted in 8-foot-deep sumps and convey water to a holding tank located 1,000 yards away. Maintenance has been minimal; the motor brushes required replacement after two years of operation, during which the pumps ran for approximately half the day. The installation design also improved to allow easier access to the motors. The site has had a positive experience with the pumps, and plans are in place to install two more Apollo pumps to replace the electric pumps currently located in 160-foot horizontal leachate sumps.
