Dynapumps custom design Fire Pumps for Lumwana Project

News

The Lumwana Project is an open cut copper mine located in the North West region of the Republic of Zambia, one of the most productive copper regions in the world. The mine is expected to produce 63-75 million kilograms of copper in 2012.

Dynapumps recently supplied a package of products to the site including 2 X Fire Pumps (dual electric and diesel with jockey pumps), 2 X Potable Water Pumps (dual electric and diesel) and 3 X Raw Water Pumps. As is Dynapumps standard practice, all four systems were fully function tested at our works prior to being taken to site.

Required duty for the In-Pit Area Fire Water Pumps changed after the design was approved for construction. Due to our custom design method, Dynapumps were able to quickly revise the design to accommodate a much larger throughput of water. The expertise of Dynapumps’ staff meant this was achievable with only a modest increase in overall system weight and no change to critical piping dimensions or base size.

The Potable water pumps were custom designed by Dynapumps for consultants Ausenco and include a single relief valve discharge,  24/7 operation of the electric motor drive pump and back-up diesel driven pump in case of first pump failure. These key features were included to ensure reliable, around the clock delivery of drinking water for site.

Dynapumps was also able to achieve commonality of spares by using the same size ISO 5199 Pumps for multiple applications and varying the impeller size. Dynapumps continues to be involved with the Lumwana Project, offering technical expertise and parts support to on-site personnel. One on one training in the operation and commissioning of these units is being organised at present.
